I am currently in my 35th year of teaching and throughout that time, I have taught and have been an assistant principal at the elementary, junior high, and a high school level. Since 1989, I have served as my school’s ATA representative.
I have served the association both provincially and at the local level.
We, as teachers, have worked extremely hard during these last few years! I am proud of the work that our local teachers have done to improve the lives of our members, students, and greater community! We need to support and to celebrate our victories. A tremendous example of our advocacy for all, was when we had created first provincial teacher GSA.
My diverse experiences have allowed me to meet and get to know many of you. You have openly shared your concerns. I want you to know that I share these and will work on your behalf.
As your president, it will be incumbent on me, to raise our collective voices to say that we will not tolerate mediocrity in a sub-standard curriculum.
Educators must, and will be present, at the table for implementation and further curriculum development. As professional educators, our concerns and voice need to be heard on critical matters such as the new curriculum implementation. As President, I will ensure that our collective voice, is heard by this government.
There will be a provincial election in the next 18-months. We must place relentless pressure on our elected officials, both in social media, in the parking lot, or at government level discussion tables!
As your president, it will be incumbent upon me to be your advocate so that our government recognizes our unwavering commitment to students and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are front-line workers and, as such, deserve fair and equitable compensation from this government.
